Sweet Black Australorp Hen

We’ve always had chickens at East Hill Farm but now we’re able to offer our eggs to CSA members at the distributions in Brighton and on the Farm. This winter we acquired some new laying hens, bringing our flock up to about 75 Black Australorps and Red Stars. They are very sweet to each other and to us – nice birds to hang out with. They eat organic feed from Lakeview Organic Grain just 20 minutes from us in Penn Yan, NY. They also free range in our orchard, scratching up every tender morsel they can find (and helping the trees out while they’re at it)! We took the hens on because a friend was downsizing his flock and needed a new home for these sweeties, who were only 9 months old at the time – right in their laying prime. They’ve been very good to us, laying the most delicious eggs we could imagine in all different shades of cream, tan and brown. We’ve been making  meringues, frittatas, Shakshuka, homemade mayonnaise, souffles and much more. So we want to share these incredible eggs with you! You’ll be able to purchase eggs from our farm at the pick ups when you get your veggie and/or bread shares. Why not an egg CSA? Not every family eats a dozen eggs every week, and we are newer at raising hens than raising veggies. So we thought we’d try it out like this, and perhaps move to an egg share if response is positive.  Let us know if you’re excited about these amazing eggs coming to a CSA pick up near you!
